Writing for Disciple Magazine

Philosophical and Practical Guidelines

A practical guide to volunteering your time and talents for the glory of God through the medium of words.

Guiding Principles

In a world full of empty words, it is the goal of Disciple Magazine to glorify God and edify the Body of Christ both in what we choose to publish and what we choose not to publish. We've established the following guidelines to ensure, to the best of our ability, we bring our subscribers only writing worth reading & applying. There are four questions (the "ABCDs") we ask of each piece before it is considered for publication:

1) Is It Authoritative?

From what perspective is the author speaking—his own or that of the Bible? Does the author use scripture correctly or are verses cited out of context? Does the author's wording reflect (or build on) the larger themes of scripture? Does the author speak with the voice of experience and/or thorough scholarship or are they speaking largely from personal opinion? "See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception, according to the tradition of men, according to the elementary principles of the world, rather than according to Christ" (Col. 2:8).

2) Is It Bold?

Is the author covering a new topic (or approaching a familiar one from a different perspective) or simply rehashing commonly accepted beliefs? Does the author have a right/reason to assert their viewpoint? Is the article likely to offend our readers? If so, is it written simply to offend, or to the end of helping them in their spiritual growth and the effectiveness of their ministry? "But speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, even Christ" (Eph. 4:15).

3) Is It Clear?

Does the article address its subject in a fashion that is both understandable and challenging to our readership? Is it self-contained or does it require extensive introduction and/or follow-up? Is the article written in a readable, dynamic style that accurately conveys its subject matter? "But sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is within you, yet with gentleness and reverence" (1 Pet. 3:15).

4) Is it Direct?

Is the author's point and style applicable to our specific audience? Does the author stick to the topic he set out to write about, or does he ramble? Is the author willing to adapt his message in a way that will best impact our readers? "I have become all things to all men, so that I may by all means save some" (1 Cor. 9:22b).

Practical Specifications

1) Audience—We service a wide range of pastors and teachers from many different countries and denominations, so we try to keep our content based firmly in Scripture. Within that framework, content can be expositional, devotional, or practical.

2) Length—800-1000 words, though shorter or longer pieces are welcome. We prefer articles to be thematically "self-contained"—i.e., if you were to write a series, please make sure that each segment is readable and understandable in its own right as well.

3) Timefame—We publish monthly (on the next-to-last Monday of each month), and our deadline for submissions is the 2nd Monday of a given month. The publication is digital-only, so our turnaround time between submission and publication is fairly short. Please make all submissions electronically.

4) Style—Times New Roman, 12 point font. Chicago Manual of Style grammatical guidelines with two notable exceptions: 1) Aside from titles, italics in the magazine are reserved for direct quotations of Scripture, and Scripture is always italicized in copy, 2) as such, we utilize bold type to express emphasis rather than italics.

Submissions

Please send submissions meeting the above guidelines to us as attached Word documents (.doc, .docx) by e-mail. Articles meeting our present/upcoming needs will be considered for publication.

As always, Disciple reserves the right to publish only those submitted articles we choose to, and to edit all submissions according to the above guidelines.
